Why the Anambas Islands?
The Anambas Islands offer breathtaking vistas, serene coves, and crystal-clear seas. Although they remain less developed for tourism than many Indonesian counterparts, they are popular among visitors craving serene beaches and world-class snorkeling spots. Marine biodiversity flourishes here, with vibrant coral fields teeming with exotic fish, sea turtles, and other aquatic creatures.
Culturally, the archipelago blends Malay and Indonesian influences, showcased in local cuisine, fishing traditions, and friendly community life. Indeed, many villages maintain old practices that revolve around the sea—vivid proof of how geography and livelihood intersect. For travelers, these islands present an ideal escape from crowded urban centers.
The opportunities for sustainable tourism and exceptional investment yield have now also put the Anambas squarely in the sites of eco resort developers, as the development opportunities in the Anambas islands are highly attractive for guests willing to pay a premium to get away from the more popular regions suffering from over tourism.
Planning and Preparations
Travel Documents and Visas
Indonesia often grants free visas or Visa on Arrival (VoA) for many nationalities, but it’s wise to check updated regulations. If you plan an extended stay or come from a country with different visa rules, confirm details via the Indonesian embassy or official government portal. Keep passports valid for at least six months. Here is the official Indonesian Government Application for a Visa on Arrival.
Currency
The local currency is Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). You’ll need cash for ferries, smaller shops, and local transportation. Although larger towns on bigger islands may accept cards, many rural areas remain cash-based. Bring enough bills to cover unexpected expenses or possible schedule changes. Here is the currency rate converter for your convenience.
Best Travel Seasons
Most visitors arrive during the dry season, from April to October. Calm waters and sunny weather make journeys more predictable. On the other hand, the wet season (November–March) can bring heavier rainfall and choppier seas. Regardless of season, always check local weather forecasts before departing. Check out our handy guide to Anambas Islands Weather for more information.
